Spain came agonisingly close to the podium at the 2023 SSL Gold Cup, finishing fourth on home waters in Gran Canaria. Now, the Spanish team returns with unfinished business and a clear ambition: to turn that near-miss into a place on the podium.

The Spanish campaign will resume in the quarter-finals in Rio de Janeiro from 7 to 10 December, where the team will face Italy. With a line-up packed with international titles, Olympic success and extensive offshore racing experience, Spain has the credentials to challenge for the trophy.
A Line-Up Packed with Champions
Spain's strength lies in the variety and depth of its sailing talent. The team brings together sailors who have competed at the Olympic Games, won world championships and raced in some of the world's most demanding offshore competitions.

Javier de la Plaza is among the experienced names in the Spanish line-up. A 49er world champion in 2000, he also finished fourth in the class at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. His career has spanned several high-level one-design and keelboat circuits, including J/80, Melges 32 and TP52 competition. He also finished second with Team Brunel in the 2014–15 Volvo Ocean Race, adding valuable experience from elite round-the-world racing.

Another major name is Támara Echegoyen, one of Spain's most accomplished sailors. An Olympic gold medallist at London 2012, she won the women's match racing title alongside Ángela Pumariega and Sofía Toro. Her career also includes multiple match racing world championship titles and participation in The Ocean Race, highlighting her versatility across both inshore and offshore formats.
Roberto Bermúdez de Castro brings another formidable offshore résumé. Across a career spanning approximately 25 years, he has competed in six editions of the Volvo Ocean Race. One of its defining moments came in 2014–15, when he was part of the winning Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing campaign. That experience in long-distance, high-pressure competition could be especially valuable as Spain faces the tactical and physical demands of the SSL Gold Cup.

Experience Across Every Discipline
The Spanish roster is notable not only for its individual achievements but also for the breadth of experience represented across the team. World and European Championship medals, Olympic success and extensive racing aboard offshore and high-performance keelboats give Spain a wealth of expertise to draw upon.
That diversity could be decisive in the SSL Gold Cup, where national pride meets short, intense team racing. Success depends on more than individual talent: communication, tactical decisions and the ability to perform together under pressure are equally important.
Spain's sailors know what it takes to win at the highest level. The challenge now is to bring those individual strengths together and deliver when it matters most.

One Step Closer to the Dream
Finishing fourth in Gran Canaria left Spain just outside the medals, but it also showed that the team could compete with the best. The return to the quarter-finals offers a fresh opportunity to go further.
