Led by match racing legend Ian Williams, SSL Team Great Britain will arrive in Rio as the top nation in the SSL Nations Ranking and one of the strongest contenders for the SSL Gold Cup title.
Few nations can match Great Britain’s record in competitive sailing. With a long maritime history and a tradition of producing world-class sailors, the British team has the experience, talent and ambition to challenge for the top spot at the SSL Gold Cup Final Series in Rio de Janeiro.
Known as The Spitfires, the team takes its name from the iconic British aircraft, reflecting a style built around speed, precision and the ability to strike when it matters most. On the water, the British crew combines experience across match racing, fleet racing and Olympic sailing, a mix that could prove decisive in the high-pressure racing ahead.

In 2026, Great Britain leads the SSL Nations Ranking, underlining the depth of talent available to the team. Its sailors have achieved success across multiple disciplines, from Olympic classes to international match racing and big-boat competition.
The British team includes John Gimson, one of the leading sailors in the Nacra 17 class, alongside his crew Anna Burnet. The wider pool of talent also features accomplished dinghy sailor Nick Craig, ILCA 7 competitor Michael Beckett, Finley Dickinson and RC44 sailor Nic Asher.
This depth gives Great Britain a strong foundation for the SSL Gold Cup, where individual skills must come together as one crew. With sailors from different backgrounds and disciplines sharing the same goal, teamwork and adaptability will be just as important as raw speed.
Great Britain also arrives with recent Olympic success behind it. At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, British sailors won medals in both the iQFOiL and Formula Kite classes, further demonstrating the country’s strength across modern sailing disciplines.

At the helm is Ian Williams, one of the most successful match racing skippers in history. A former lawyer who turned professional sailing into a record-breaking career, Williams became the first British skipper to win the Match Racing World Championship and has since claimed the title multiple times.
His achievements continued beyond the SSL Gold Cup. In 2024, Williams secured his eighth Match Racing World Championship title, setting another milestone in an already remarkable career.
Williams brings more than a winning record to the team. Match racing demands tactical awareness, sharp decision-making and the ability to perform under pressure, qualities that can make a difference when races are tight and every manoeuvre counts.

At the SSL Gold Cup in Gran Canaria in 2023, Great Britain was considered one of the favourites. The team delivered a strong performance, winning all its quarter-final races before finishing third in its semi-final fleet. That result placed the British crew fifth overall, just short of the medal races.
The experience will give the team valuable lessons to draw on as it prepares for another challenge. With Great Britain now leading the SSL Nations Ranking and bringing together a strong group of experienced sailors, expectations will once again be high.

The Spitfires are heading to Rio with a clear objective: turn their reputation into results and fight for the SSL Gold Cup title.
