Understanding the SSL System: Key Questions Answered

Share it

The Star Sailors League (SSL) continues to shape modern sailing through its unique competition structure, ranking system, and commitment to inclusivity. Below, we break down some of the most common questions from fans and athletes to help clarify how it all works.

SEA Games and the SSL Gold Cup – what’s the connection?

Although the SSL 47 yachts were featured during the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand as part of the regatta program, this event was not linked to the SSL Gold Cup pathway.

Teams representing Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Myanmar competed in the event, showcasing the growing popularity of the SSL 47 format in international competitions. However, it’s important to note that participation in the SEA Games does not influence qualification or results in the SSL Gold Cup.

Gender diversity on board

Inclusivity is a key pillar of the SSL’s development strategy. As part of its latest policies, each team is required to have at least two women in the squad.

This rule is designed to actively promote gender diversity in sailing and ensure greater representation of women at the highest level of competition. The initiative reflects a broader movement within the sport to create more equal opportunities and visibility.

How does the SSL Ranking system work?

The SSL Ranking system is designed to be intuitive and accessible, drawing inspiration from the ATP tennis ranking model. Its goal is to give fans a clear picture of who the top sailors are at any given time.

Points are awarded after each regatta based on a defined scoring structure, and rankings are updated regularly. What makes the system unique is its scope, it allows comparisons across different sailing classes.

The ranking includes results from:

  • all Olympic classes
  • a selection of 100 non-Olympic classes

Why isn’t a world champion automatically ranked at the top?

Winning a World Championship is a major achievement—but it doesn’t automatically guarantee the top spot in the SSL Ranking.

This is because rankings are calculated based on a sailor’s six best results over the past two years. Consistency over time plays a crucial role. Even a gold medal performance must be supported by other strong results within that two-year window.

As a result, sailors who perform consistently well across multiple events may rank higher than those with a single standout victory.
